Welcome to 6th grade Mathematics! I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to the 2017-2018 school year and tell you a little bit about myself. This is my fourth year of teaching at Somerset Intermediate School, as well as the fourth year of my teaching career. I graduated from Salisbury University in 2014 (Go Gulls!). I am currently working on my master’s degree as well in Middle School Mathematics Education. Hopefully I will have that completed this school year! I married my wonderful husband Josh in 2014 and we have a dog named Zeus.
I am looking forward to an exciting and productive year working together to help your child reach his or her fullest potential. The Maryland College and Career Ready Standards will be fully implemented and although the content of what is being taught is similar to years past, the way in which this content will be presented is different than how you and I were taught in a traditional classroom years ago. Students have already been exposed to this way of presenting of materials in their fifth grade classroom, but it is still somewhat new. Students will be asked to think critically and “discover” many math concepts rather than being given an algorithm to memorize. This will help to ensure your child becomes a critical learner that can apply these new skills into real life situations. The topics that we will cover throughout the year include Number Sense, Ratios and Proportions, Algebraic Thinking, Geometry, and Statistical Thinking.
